Rotary provides electricity to remote villages in Ratnapura

The Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan together with Rotary District 2700 of Japan has completed constructing a 55Kw Micro Power Plant in Ratkurugala in the Ratnapura district.

The project work is carried out by M/s Enco with the support of the villagers of the area and supported by the members of the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan. All electro-mechanical equipment except the industrial generator is manufactured locally by the expertise of M/s Enco.

Funding of the project is by Rotary District 2700 of Japan, the Metro Club, M/s Enco and the village consumer society (who get a bank loan from DFCC). The total project costs Rs. 4,100,000 and will generate 55 Kw of hydro power to benefit 150 households who normally are highly unlikely to get power in the near future.

No trees were cutdown and the entire project is environment friendly.

The water collected in the small reservoir will be channelled through PVC pipes 750 ft with a head of 70 meters to the powerhouse and then sent back to the stream. Even in the height of the drought the stream will have sufficient water to generate power to the village.

The plant will be the largest micro power plant in Sri Lanka.

Last year the same Joint Venture Partners concluded a Micro Power plant of 45 Kw in Veediyawatte in the Deraniyagala district. The plant benefited 130 households.

The Japanese Rotarians Kimiaki Hirose, Chairman WCS, Tetsuo Hozakiu Vice Chairman WCS, Shiinya Minakawa Vice Chairman WCS, Mitsuru Kayano and Tsutomu Mukae were present to open the power plant on September 14, 2002 in Ratnapura with Minister Susantha Punchinilame and Rtn Rajah Abeyasinghe, President of the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan.
