by Nadira Gunatilleke Sri Lanka and China have been maintaining a close relationship for a long time and the friendship strengthened from time to time especially during the period of late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike Women's Affairs Minister Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake said,yesterday. She was speaking at the International Women's Day celebration organised by Association for Sri Lanka - China Social and Cultural Co-operation (ASLCSCC) held at the Sirimavo Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo yesterday. The Minister said that Chinese Government has granted a large sum of funds to provide electricity to the rural areas of the country. "Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe introduced a special manifesto for women for the first time in the Sri Lankan history and today we implement it step by step. It is women who make a major contribution to the country's economy. Majority of students who study in the Law College are females and the situation is same in the Medical faculties in the State Universities. Today the major problem faced by women is sexual abuse. Therefore both children and their parents should be educated on this issue ", the Minister added. Acting Chinese Ambassador, Zhang Weiguo said that Sri Lanka and China have had a long standing friendship and it will be further strengthened by the newly formed Sri Lanka - China Women's Circle. This new organisation will safeguard women's rights and further improve understanding between the two countries, he added. Sri Lanka - China Women's Circle was officially formed during the ceremony. |
