Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake has raised strong objections to the proposal by Sri Lanka Telecom to raise phone charges by some 250%. In a strongly worded letter to the Chairman of SLT Thilanga Sumathipala, Karunanayake said yesterday that before raising charges, the consumer should have been uppermost in the minds of the country's premier fixed line provider. "I am greatly disturbed by your proposed move. I shall request you to reconsider your decision, within the powers vested in you, on a urgent basis," he wrote. What Telecom is proposing, Karunanayake said, "is even worse than what Shell has done." He also noted that the government's policy is to allow greater competition to bring down costs to the consumer. He added that telecom tariffs are coming down the world over including the South Asian region. |
