Seven-year-old Nonariyasa, a year two student in a Colombo school stares pensively at the street and ponders her future. Today is International Women’s day, a time for womankind to reflect upon what progress they have made over the years to ensure their rights are protected and seek to make this cruel world more secure for themselves. In many parts of the globe women remain highly disadvantaged. They are abused, exploited and sadly in some places traded like cattle. Governments in South Asia have already recognized that the girl-child remains firmly at the bottom of the pecking order in this region. The torrent of words expressing good intentions that will surely pour from the mouths of countless prominent people today won’t be worth a five-cent coin if they cannot ensure that little girls like this one can grow up to realize their dreams in a safer world.
