Gantry cranes for SLPA - Unity container terminal The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is redeveloping the former oil berth, the North Pier, into a fully equipped Container Terminal, the Unity Container Terminal (UCT) in an effort to further enhance the container handling capacity in the Port of Colombo. This Terminal will be equipped with three Quay-side Container Cranes and eight Transfer Cranes, a spokesman for the SLPA said. A contract for the supply of these Cranes was signed recently between the SLPA and Itochu Corporation of Japan for the supply of three Container Cranes from Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries of Japan (IHI) for JY 1,139 million and eight Transfer Cranes from Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd (SHI) for JY 809.38 million. The container cranes will be similar to that at the feeder berth viz. 13 boxes out reach and 41 Ton load capacity. The transfer cranes will be of 1 over 5 capability and 41 Ton load capacity, the spokesman said. This equipment will cost Rs. 1,700 million in total and is due to be delivered in 14 months. With the supply of this equipment and the computerised handling of this Terminal, it is anticipated that an additional capacity of around 400,000 TEUs would be added to the Port of Colombo. |
