National Shipping and Port policy report soon

The committee appointed to review the National Shipping and Port policy of Sri Lanka has invited experts, specialists and operators to submit their views and observations with regard to the existing problems in their respective areas of interest, a statement from the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping said. The committee was appointed by the Minister of Port Development and Shipping Rauff Hakeem and so far they have held nine meetings.

The invitees were from the areas of Bunkering, Salvage, Towage, Ship Chandling and Offshore Ship Supplies, Ship Management, Ship Repair and Ship Building, Multi Country Consolidation, Entreport Trade and Bulk Shipping, Logistics Services, Maritime Training Education, Marine Legal Services, Marine Surveying, Service Providers to Trade, E-Business facilities, Land Transport, Security and Container Terminal Operators.

The final report will be handed over to the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping in due course, the statement said.

The first meeting of the Committee on Port and Shipping Policy of Sri Lanka was held on January 20.

At the first meeting the Committee discussed on macro and micro economic objectives in developing the ancillary services in the shipping sector. They had also discussed on funding the development of ancillary services, ship repair and ship building, multi-country consolidation, entrepot trade and bulk shipping, bunkering, salvage and towage ship chandling and off shore supplies cruise shipping and marinas ship management and foreign investment in shipping agency companies.

Shipping industry sources said that the policy should be in line with futuristic global shipping and ports scenario, to set a vision and mission for each segment within the ports and shipping sector and specify goals for the new five years, to prepare a plan of action to achieve these goals and to prepare fiscal and other incentive requirements to achieve these goals.

Heads of key associations and institutions in the shipping sector including Ceylon Association of Ships Agents (CASA), Sri Lanka Association of Vessel Operators (SLAVO), Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Sri Lanka Shippers Council, Sri Lanka Freight forwarders Association, Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agents, Association of container Transporters, Central Freight Bureau and Ceylon Shipping Corporation were in the Committee.
