Mob attacks Indonesian police station, kills one policeman: reports

JAKARTA, March 5 (AFP) - Dozens of unidentified men attacked a district police station in the Indonesian capital Jakarta overnight, killing one policeman and injuring several others, reports said Wednesday.

The men attacked the Makassar post in East Jakarta close to midnight Tuesday, beating up officers and vandalising the premises, the Detikcom online news service said.

One policeman was stabbed and hit on the head and died later in hospital, the news service quoted an officer as saying.

Police spokesmen declined to comment. An officer on duty at East Jakarta police confirmed only that the Makassar station came under attack.

ElShinta radio said police, military police and soldiers were guarding the building, all of whose windows were broken.

Detikcom said the attack may have involved members of the armed forces. Jakarta police chief Makbul Padmanegara told the news service it was too early to reach any conclusions.

The attack may have been prompted by a trivial dispute involving a woman on Saturday evening, the news service said.

There have been a series of clashes between the police and the armed forces since the police split from the military in 1999 to become a separate force.

In December a military tribunal jailed 10 soldiers for their part in a pitched battle with police in North Sumatra that claimed 11 lives.
