Royal-Thomian match from March 13 to 15

The 124th Battle of the Blues between Royal College, Colombo and S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia for the D. S. Senanayake Shield will be worked off on March 13, 14 and 15 at the SSC grounds, Colombo. It will be sponsored by Dialog GSM for the third consecutive year.

Tryphon Mirando of the Royal-Thomian organising committee speaking at a press briefing at the Continental Hotel on Tuesday said that the Royal-Thomian encounter is one of the oldest school cricket matches in the world which has been played without a break since 1880. This match is always played in the best traditions of the game and has produced a high standard of cricket.

In a bid to bring about a result 100 overs will be bowled on the first two days while 105 overs will be bowled on the third day. The limited over match will be played at Premadasa stadium on March 22. The Warden of S. Thomas Dr. David Ponniah said that the Royal-Thomian is not only a cricket match but a social event bringing together the strong traditions of the two schools which had existed for over 150 years. Dialog GSM should be commended for coming forward to sponsor the match. Although the Thomians go in as the underdogs in the Big Match they are sure to come up with a fine performance.

General Manager (Sales and Marketing) of Dialog GSM Nushad Perera said that the company was interested in sports sponsorship at school level and that this was not confined to the Royal Thomian cricket encounter alone and it is indeed a privilege to be the main sponsor for both encounters. "We'd like to be the sponsor of all the main cricket encounters and thereby get actively involved in 'big matches'.
