Moors looking for another giant-killing effort

by Chris Dhambarage

Moors Sports Club will be hoping for another giant killing performance when they take on Bloomfield in the Premier Super League cricket tournament four day final starting at the R. Premadasa Stadium today.

Moors SC put up a stunning performance in the semi-finals to beat CCC after having conceded first innings points. In contrast Bloomfield powered their way into the final with a crushing innings win over SSC with two days to spare in their semi-final. Led by left arm spinner Rangana Herath Moors SC will be fielding a well balanced side and also include a number of outstanding players who have performed exceptionally well in this tournament. Herath led the way last week with a six wicket haul against CCC and has so far captured 36 wickets. Another key player in their bowling attack is left arm paceman Nandika Ranjith who has been unfortunately overlooked by the national selectors.

The former schoolboy of Veluwana MV who is considered as one of the fastest bowlers in Sri Lanka has picked up a total of 41 wickets with a best effort of six for 27. In addition he ruturned excellent figures of 6 for 17 including a hat-trick in a one day match against NCC and has claimed five wickets in an innings on three occasions.

Moors SC will be also depending on all-rounder Chandika Hathurusinghe who has been already selected as the player of the tournament. He has scored 597 runs including five half centuries and captured 49 wickets with best figures of 5 for 32. However their batting will be spearheaded by the consistent Bathiya Perera who has accumulated 815 runs with one double century and three fifties.

Bloomfield too will be fielding a formidable side and are determined to maintain their impressive record in the tournament. They finished well on top at the completion of the first round and will be hoping to add the finishing touches with another magnificent performance.

Meanwhile Sajith Fernando the prolific run getter from Colts CC and Nuwan Kulasekera of Galle CC have been selected as the best batsman and best bowler of the tournament respectively. They will receive Rs. 50,000 each. The champions will receive Rs. 750,000 and the runners-up Rs. 400,000. The man of the final will be presented Rs. 50,000.
