Stepmotherly treatment for talented teachers, says Minister

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Talented and hard-working teachers are being sidelined, said Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku. School discipline in the Western Province has already been ruined with the appointment of unqualified persons for executive posts and offering positions to political henchmen overlooking qualified persons. Talented and hard-working school teachers are also being sidelined, he said.

"I will not play politics with the lives of 4.2 million school children," he said speaking at the inter-house sports meet of Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya and St. Clares Girls College, Colombo.

"Education cannot be developed by decisions taken merely concerning about becoming popular," the Minister said.

Dr. Kodithuwakku said decisions that bring popularity within one night can be taken but the same decisions bring disgrace and shame in the future. One can be subjected to severe mud-slinging campaigns due to such decisions, he said.

Various power-hungry forces are now trying to sabotage the Government's peace process which has brought relief to the war-affected families, especially children, wives and parents, the Minister said.
