Schoolchildren to learn about civic duties - DIG Bodhi Liyanage

by Sarath Malalasekera

In an effort to ensure a peaceful and law abiding society, Police have launched a special programme to educate schoolchildren, the future inheritors of the nation on their civic duties and responsibilities, Colombo DIG Bodhi Liyanage said addressing the students of De La Salle College, Colombo 15 on Friday.

Bro. A.E. Tarcisius, principal of the De La Salle College presided at the meeting. Colombo North SP H.S. Dayananda, ASP Piyaratne, Chief Inspector Upali Bandara, OIC, Modera Police, Inspectors Wickremasinghe and Madanayake also participated at the meeting.

DIG Liyanage emphasised that as part of this programme, security, environment, anti-narcotics and traffic committees have been set up in schools in the Colombo Police Division to solicit the support of schoolchildren in combating crime and other anti-social practices.

The Colombo DIG who is spearheading this program said the prime duty of the Police is to maintain law and order in the country. As part of these duties the police have to investigate crime, arrest suspects and bring criminals before a court of law, combat crime and fraud and maintain patrols, protect life and property and control traffic. The total Police Force is 66,000 which is totally inadequate when compared to the country's total population of 18 million.

Due to this great disparity it has become essential for the police to obtain the support of students to prevent crime and maintain law and order.

No organisation can achieve its noble objectives without the support and co-operation of the public. It is to facilitate this support that the Police have decided to educate schoolchildren the future elder citizens, on their social duties and responsibilities, the Colombo DIG added.
