Compensation for fourth batch of workers

By Ananda Kannangara

The fourth batch of 1,692 Sri Lankan migrant workers who lost jobs in Kuwait in the Gulf War in August 1990 will be paid compensation at a ceremony to be held at BMICH under the patronage of Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe today.

The United Nations Compensation Committee (UNCC) has granted Rs 480 million to meet the payment and each worker will receive approximately Rs. 286,000. The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) will organise the ceremony. Nearly 98,500 Sri Lankan workers employed in Kuwait lost employment in the Gulf War which resulted from Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. "A number of workers found jobs in other countries. Meanwhile some Lankan workers remained at safe places in Kuwait," he said.
