Railway to streamline land management

The Railways Department has launched a special programme to ensure the proper management of Department land rented out to different entities and individuals. The Department will re-estimate the value of all land and change the rents according to their current values. Around 2,616 acres out of the total 13,638 acres of land owned by the Department have been rented out to various companies and state-owned institutions including banks, ministries and corporations.

Department sources said that at least 42 acres of this land are illegally utilised by individuals who have not paid rents for a number of years. "There are around 7,200 files with the Department regarding the lands that have been rented out.

However, there are many people who have made illegal constructions and made even the non-rented lands their home.

The Department will first ask them to pay the rent and take legal action against illegal occupants if necessary," he said.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation is among the institutions which have failed to pay the required rent, he said.

The re-estimation of Department land is one proposal forwarded to the Railway Management Council appointed by Transport Minister Tilak Marapana recently.
