A documentation of events exposed in time to celebrate a year without war

Dawn of Hope

by Prasad Abu Bakr

The first group of pictures comes under the caption 'Mayhem in the South' depicting the Central Bank bombing and the Katunayake Airport raid reminding the viewer of how both events were capable of crippling normalcy in our lives. From there onwards 'Dawn of Hope', an exhibition currently showing at the Colombo Art Gallery, takes you through an assortment of situations reflecting how war can and did enforce its ugliness on innocent people on whom it was forced upon.

Besides appearing as a documented essay of events and situations the exhibition brings out to public view some rare images of places that has had minimum exposure. "A leader's birthplace", a frontal view of the house where LTTE leader Velupillai Prabakaran was born and 'Hirigaduseya' showing ruins of a site believed to have contained the only hair-relics of the Buddha in Kuchchiveli, Pulmudai are two such examples. Amongst the photographs were also excellent compositions that covered-up for artistry within documented work.

'Untouched by devastation' showing the statue of the Virgin Mary standing unharmed amidst shattered surroundings somewhere in the North, projecting to the viewer not only the damage that war can inflict but also of faith that can bloom from within such chaos.

'On the hard road to peace' and 'What will tomorrow bring?' composed of grim faces living in hope are capable of moving the viewer. they are excellent images of faces and moods. 'Wheels of freedom' is yet another exceptional piece showing bicycles being loaded on top of a old model vehicle, totally the image represents a sculpture composed of metal and humans, hues of blues reflecting from the sarongs and parts of the bicycles composes a poem of colour. 'Sacrificing on a long journey' brings into play a coconut tree into the focal point of the picture surrounded by tombstones in a grave yard.

There and so many others with topics like 'What will tomorrow bring', 'Relics of war', 'Anxious wait', 'Resurgence' 'Children of the future' and 'Revived by the water of life', which take the viewer through a journey unparalled, for the simple reason that not many photographs of this nature are brought forward for public viewing. 'Dawn of Hope', A year without war, is now on at the Colombo Art Gallery open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. daily. The exhibition is presented by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd in collaboration with the Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process.
