Isipatana spinners dismiss Thurstan for 196

by Chris Dhambarage

Spinners Chanuka Perera and Anushka Bandara shared nine wickets between them as Isipatana dismissed their traditional rivals Thurstan for 196 runs in their first innings on the opening day of their 40th annual Big Match played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

The Thurstanites put into bat reached 82 for 2 at lunch following a good start provided by their openers Thilina Masmulla and Charith Wickremaratne. But once the spinners were introduced into the attack Thurstan really struggled for runs and lost wickets at regular intervals.

All their batsmen got a good start but could not settle down to play a long innings.

Chanuka Perera got rid of both openers and was responsible for the first four batsmen as Thurstan from a sound 42 for no loss collapsed to 109 for 4 shortly after lunch. Perera picked up another wicket and went on to finish with excellent figures of 5 for 62. Anushka Bandara took over from thereonwards and polished off the tail with some tight bowling which gave him superb figures of 4 for 23.

In reply Isipatana recovered from losing a wicket in the second ball of the match to reach 115 for 3 with Saman Nishantha unbeaten on 74.
