Girl Guides celebrate "Thinking Day"

Thinking Day is the day we think of our sister guides all over the world. It is also a special day in a Girl Guide and Girl Scout year, to remember that we are a part of an international movement. February 22nd was the birthday of both Lord Baden Powell our founder and his wife Lady Olave Baden Powel our World Chief Guide.

At the World Conference in 1926 it was suggested that February 22 be set apart as 'Thinking Day'. In 1932 a thinking day fund was introduced to make girl guides think of every sister guide. This idea became very popular. The "Thinking Day Fund" that is collected is used to promote and develop guiding among the under-privileged communities around the world. Support projects and programmes in the Guide World. Later in the year 1975, a "Thinking Day Symbol" was also introduced, and the "Thinking Day Fund" was renamed "World Thinking Day Fund" in 1999.

As we belong to a worldwide movement, girls require knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help them live in an increasingly more diverse and inter-dependent world. This may be encouraging for the girls to think of their 'WAGGGS' (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) counterparts as sisters, who share many of the same concerns, interests and skills.

On thinking day Guide Companies all over the world organise celebrations which include the renewal of the 'Guide Promise' and fun activities giving emphasis to the international aspect of it. This year the Girl Guides in Sri Lanka will celebrate this function in their own districts.

The Colombo District Girl Guides will commence their celebrations at 7.30 a.m. from the Girl Guide headquarters. They will walk along Dharmapala Mawatha round the Lipton Circus and return to the Girl Guide Headquarters where a 'Good Fiesta' Food from different countries will be on sale followed by a get-to-gether with a lot of singing and fun.
