The People's Alliance (PA) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday tried to iron out differences over the ethnic problem at the talks aimed at forming an alliance, both parties said. The two parties had a considerable degree of differences only on the ethnic issue, a JVP spokesman said, adding that both parties had been able to agree on a number of issues on the nature of the solution to the ethnic problem. He however refused to elaborate. The talks held at the President's House lasted two hours. The PA delegation comprised General Secretary D.M. Jayaratne, SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena, Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Nimal Siripala de Silva. JVP General Secretary Tylvin Silva led his party's delegation comprising Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa and MP Vijitha Herath. The two parties have been talking for over two months on the "proposals to rebuild the Nation", a blueprint designed by the JVP as the agenda for a possible alliance. The proposals focus on the solution to the ethnic problem and economic development. The JVP spokesman said the greater part of proposals on the economy has already been agreed upon. The two parties will meet next week for another round of talks. |
