Warne's Cup exit a warning for all - Fleming

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Shane Warne's positive drugs test was a warning to all players about the dangers of taking non-prescribed medication, says New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

Leg spinner Warne pulled out of the World Cup on Tuesday after testing positive for diuretics and Fleming believes this highlighted the risks faced by players who took medications without confirming whether they contained banned substances.

"I'm extremely shocked and surprised at the situation and I hope, knowing Shane that I do, that it works out for him," Fleming told a news conference on Wednesday.

"There are risks and the players have to understand, probably more so when they're out of competition, about exactly what needs to be done."

New Zealand's cricketers were well-informed about the risk of taking medications when involved in competitions where testing takes place, Fleming added. He said players were aware of athletes from other sports who had failed doping tests while using cough medications and asthma sprays but that most cricketers knew very little about what to do while being treated for injuries out of competition. "It's very difficult when you're out of competition and you're out of the umbrella of your medical panel," Fleming said.

"It opens up an area which we've probably got to make a bit more thorough in New Zealand about because there is the opportunity for players to make a mistake."

Warne, the greatest leg spinner in history and who was expected to play a major role in the cup before retiring from one-dayers to concentrate on test cricket, failed a test on January 22 in Australia.

The International Cricket Council announced in September that dope testing would be introduced at the cricket World Cup for the first time, in accordance with South African law.
