Hwang topples top seed Marutha Devi

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Sri Lankans Amrit Rupasinghe and Harshana Godamanne had to wait for another day to try out their destinies as their boy's singles semi-finals were put off for today due to damp courts while Taiwanese I-Hsuan Hwang stormed into the girl's singles final on the fourth day of the 20th International Tennis Federation Junior International Championship continued at the National Tennis Centre courts yesterday.

Hwang sprang the shock on day four when she toppled the top seed Indian Marutha Devi in straight sets at the week-long tournament, hosted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association on behalf of the International Tennis Federation.

Meanwhile, more than 250 minutes play was lost yesterday due to damp courts. It looked as if Hwang is making the story short to catch the lost time as she swept past Devi, 6/2, 6/3, in a shade over an hour. The Taiwanese will meet second seed Vandana Murali in the final today. Murali defeated fellow Indian Shwetha Kakhandi, 7/5, 6/1, in 85 minutes in the second semi-final.

Fourth seed Amrit Rupasinghe of S. Thoma's, Kollupitiya, will meet second seed Tsubasa Morizane of Japan, in one semi-final with Rupasinghe is aiming for a second ITF Junior title having won the first in Colombo last September.

Harshana Godamanne, winner of ITF under-18 singles in Pakistan last year, too was bidding for a second ITF title, but his plans were upset by unseeded Oshada Wijemanne in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Royalist Wijemanne will take on top seed Chatwinder Singh of India in the other semi-final.

Meanwhile, Franklyn Emmanuel and S. Nishendran won their boy's doubles quarter-finals over compatriots D. Kaneshyogan and S. Sabanathan, 6/2, 6/4. They meet the top seeds Jitin Bishnoi and Chatwinder Singh of India in the semi-final.

Sri Lankan pair of Nawchali de Silva and Vindya Dayananda squandered a chance of qualifying for the final of the girl's doubles. The Sri Lankans took the first set 7/5 from the Thai-Indonesian combination of Ratchaya Chaichandchai and Denise Harijato. But they failed to reproduce their form in the next two sets and went down,
