Army probes Manipay incident by Ranil Wijayapala The Army is inquiring into Wednesday's Manipay incident where several soldiers and LTTE cadres were injured in a quarrel that started over military belts worn by female LTTE cadres. The Army will take disciplinary action against Army personnel involved in the incident, defence sources said. A court of inquiry has been appointed to inquire into the incident while Military Police are conducting another inquiry, the sources told the Daily News yesterday. The scuffle began when soldiers at the checkpoint refused to allow women Tiger cadres wearing military belts into the cleared area. Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Sarath Fonseka at a meeting held between the two parties with the intervention of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission assured that steps will be taken to prevent the repetition of such incidents on the part of the Army. The LTTE Political leadership in Jaffna also assured that women cadres wearing such belts will not be allowed to enter cleared areas in future. |
