News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Govt. initiates national productivity programmes by Ananda Kannangara The importance of drafting a National Productivity Policy (NPP) is vital now when the Government is in the process of implementing productivity programmes for the country, Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said. He made these observations at a ceremony held at the BMICH to coincide with the National Productivity Awards presentation for 2003. Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya also attended. Addressing award winners, Minister Samarasinghe thanked the USAID for formulating the NPP through US experts. "This Policy has gone through several rounds of discussions and has been adopted after incorporating the inputs of the Advisory Committee on Productivity. Public views through a special website dedicated for the purpose was also obtained," the Minister said. He said the assistance of the Asian Productivity Organisation to prepare a Productivity Policy for the public sector component of the NPP was essential. "A productivity nation is a prosperous nation and the standard of living of a nation is determined by the productivity of its economy." Samarasinghe said. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe initiated the National Productivity Awards in 1993 during his tenure as the Minister of Industries and Scientific Affairs considering the importance of strengthening the country's productivity. "The Premier also commenced the National Quality Awards Scheme with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution to recognize companies which excelled in quality management", Samarasinghe said. The Minister thanked award winners for their efforts in improving productivity. |
