Envoy tells Lankans in Switzerland : Participate in economic development

Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the United Nation in Geneva, Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam called upon all Sri Lankans in Switzerland and others to participate in the country's economic development activities as momentous events were surfacing with the peace prospects.

Sri Lankans have a greater responsibility at this decisive juncture, Kariyawasam told Sri Lanka's 55th Independence Day celebrations in Geneva last week.

As a gesture of support to Sri Lanka's development effort, the Swiss Government had granted around Rs. 490 million for development, he added.

Kariyawasam noted that any tourist can freely move in any part of the country without any obstacle today and enjoy the country at leisure.

Although many world economies have experienced recessions and economic crises, the Colombo Stock Exchange has recorded a 50 per cent growth which is a reflection of the sound economic situation in Sri Lanka, the envoy said.

He said the international community commended the peace process and they have extended their fullest support for its success.
