Private tutories a threat, says Prelate

by Panadura group correspondent

Private tutories are a threat to students, said Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Neramane Buddarakitha Nayaka Thera, chief incumbent of the Jenendra Chaitharamaya, Egodauyana, Moratuwa.

Speaking at a ceremony to felicitate Daham pasela teachers and to present medals to students of Sri Gnanawimala Daham Pasela at Sri Paramavisudda Ramaya Temple at Gangula, Panadura, he said Buddhists and the clergy had requested the former government and the Buddha Sasana Ministry to close down private tutories on Poya days as students were not attending Daham Pasela classes.

"But the former government did not take any action," he said.

The print and electronic media must be responsible for the crime, rape and robberies in the country because the media publishes details of criminal activities and television screens some programmes not fit for children. If the younger generation attends Daham paselas and mould their characters according to Lord Buddha's teachings, will not be a burden to the society, he said.

Ven. Buddharakitha Nayake Thera said without Daham pasela education, no one could mould their character to become an asset to the society.

"Education at government schools is becoming unpopular and private tutories are becoming popular among students. Private tutories are a threat to students," he said.

The jak planting project is a development project introduced by Lake House. It is a successful development project, the thera said.

Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Kamburupitiye Nayake Thera, Chief Sanganayaka Thera of Western Province said the print and electronic media must encourage the development activities and religious affairs in the country, instead of destroying the future of the younger generation by producing adult dramas.

Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd Chairman, Nalin Ladduwahetty said as soon as he was appointed Lake House Chairman he inquired why the late D. R. Wijewardene established Lake House. He found in a document that the late Wijewardene wanted to safeguard the freedom of the people and encourage the development of Buddhist activities in the country.

His ambition was very successful and as the chairman of Lake House he took every action to encourage Buddhist activities and develop the Buddha Sasana helping the Maha Sanga.

"Lake House spent money recently to provide electricity to the Dalada Mandiraya, Kiriwehera in Kataragama and Mahabodi temple in Chennai. It is the responsibility of all of us to safeguard the Buddhasasana and the younger generation to mould their characters," the chairman said.

The chairman said to encourage activities of the Gnanawimala Dahampasala in Gangula, Panadura, he donated Rs. 25,000.

He was satisfied that this school is rendering yeoman service to the children in Panadura.

The chairman, his wife, and D. P. L. C. Perera, Panadura Divisional Secretary and K. Champa N. Perera, Panadura Assistant Secretary at the Divisional Secretariat presented certificates to the Dahampasala students.
