Six police killed in rebel-led ambushes in east India RANCHI, India, Feb 10 (AFP) - Ten people, including six paramilitary soldiers, were killed Monday in ambushes by left-wing rebels in the east Indian state of Jharkhand, police said. Four members of the banned Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) and one Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldier were killed in an MCC-led ambush at Chandwa in Latehar district, police chief R.R. Prasad said. Five other soldiers were injured, two critically. Police reinforcements were sent to the site but they were also ambushed by a gang of rebels and in the encounter five CRPF men were killed and two injured. Additional police are being rushed to the area. The ultra-left MCC claims to be fighting for social and political change in downtrodden Bihar and other poor states. It had called for a 48-hour general strike in the state to protest an anti-terror drive by the government. |
