DSS fine all-round display

by Chris Dhambarage

D. S. Senanayake College proved their all round potential as they scored a stunning seven wicket win over St. Joseph's College in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket encounter at Wijerama Mawatha.

D. S. Senanayake also moved further up in the 'A' Division points table and look set to cause a major threat to the rest of the opponents. Their success over St. Joseph's College was probably fashioned on the opening day itself where they reduced the opposition to 65 for 6 at one stage.

Another feature in their victory was that they never depended on individual brilliance but every member of the side contributed towards their success. The bowlers simply stuck to their task and performed the basics of bowling a good line and length which made their task much easier. They did not perform anything extra ordinary on the field but held on to the catches which came their way and made run making somewhat difficult to the opposition.

Even then Udara Warna had an outstanding game scoring a solid half century and then picking up five wickets in the match. His knock of 52 certainly boosted their total and with Dinesh de Silva also making a half century D. S. Senanayake were able to get pass the two hundred run mark without any great difficulties. The bowlers then got their act together well and exploited the conditions beautifully while capturing few early wickets.

The Josephians struggled from the beginning and were bundled out for a mere 89 runs. They were facing an innings defeat at one stage but a late rally from their tailenders saved the side from that humiliation. D. S. Senanayake did not waste any time in reaching their target with skipper Kanchana Gunawardena leading their way with an unbeaten knock of 27.

Thurstan v Maliyadeva

Thurstan College received a tremendous boost just a couple of weeks ahead of the Big Match as they recorded a morale boosting win over Maliyadeva College Kurunegala at the De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa. This was in fact their first win for the season and they did it in style winning by a massive margin of an innings and 24 runs.

The two players who made major contributions towards their success was Dasun Randhika and J. Chamikara. The former hit an unbeaten knock of 157 which gave the Thurstanites the luxury of declaring their first innings at 273 for 5.

Chamikara then further strengthened their position with a fine spell of bowling which earned him a five wicket haul. Chamikara went on to pick up eight wickets in the match and with Gamage also claiming a five wicket haul Thurstan were able to add the finishing touches quite easily.

Wesley v St. Anthony's

Meanwhile Farveez Maharoof continued his excellent form in the current season as Wesley College took major honours in their fixture against St. Anthony's College played at Campbell Park. Maharoof smashed 72 in almost even time as Wesley overtook the Antonian total of 153 for 6 quite easily. The Antonians certainly made the mistake by declaring their first innings early and paid the penalty at the end. Nevertheless they regained some prestige by notching up over three hundred runs in their second innings. This was mainly due to a superb knock of 101 from their leading run getter Tyronne de Silva. The Antonians occupied the crease almost the entire second day and really put the pressure on the Wesleyites scoring 320 in their second innings. Prince of Wales v Maliyadeva

Two good bowling performances from Surendra Peiris and Sahan Wijeratne gave Prince of Wales College Moratuwa a first innings win over Maliyadeva College Kurunegala in their match at the Welagedera stadium. In fact the Cambrians were not far away from pulling off an outright win as the home side collapsed to 163 for 8 in their second innings.

Surendra Peiris took the bowling honours with splendid figures of 7 for 39 which send the opposition crashing to just 106 runs in their first innings. Sahan Wijeratne then made his presence felt as he picked up five wickets while making a desperate attempt to force an outright win. Wijeratne claimed 5 for 42 but the Devans held on determinedly scoring 163 for 8 in their second innings.

Isipatana v St. Sebastian's

Isipatana staged a superb second innings rally to force a draw to their encounter against the strong St. Sebastian's outfit at Moratuwa. They were facing defeat at one stage after conceding a first innings lead of over one hundred runs. But their batsmen put up an improved performance and certainly surprised the opposition with A. Bandara and C. Perera stroking half centuries.

Their performances with the bat was really encouraging especially with the Big Match around the corner.

They eventually finished at 206 for 8 which is a tremendous improvement considering their first innings debacle where they were shot out for 131 runs. The Sebastianites however dominated the proceedings on the opening day with the consistent Manjula Silva capturing another four wicket haul.

Lumbini MV v St. Benedict's

The defending champions Lumbini MV kept their hopes alive with a first innings win over St. Benedict's College in their rain hit encounter at Kotahena. Lumbini MV made the maximum use from the limited opportunities and bowled out the home side for a modest total of 160 runs. The Lumbini MV bowling has been quite outstanding throughout the season and they reconfirmed it with another disciplined performance on the field.

P. Nishantha did most of the damage with a five wicket haul and received good support from Malinga Pushpakumara. Lumbini MV who were really concerned about the unpredictable weather went through some anxious moments and eventually overtook their opponents total for the loss of six wickets. Malinga Perera guided them with an unbeaten half century before declaring with a first innings lead of 14 runs.

S. Thomas' v St. Peter's

S. Thomas' and St. Peter's played out a draw with the latter taking major honours for a splendid batting performance. The Peterites produced a powerful display as they rattled up 278 for 9 with Samidda Gallage completing a near century. However the Thomians held on determinedly with Sean Gunasekera stroking an unbeaten half century in their total of 193 for 8.

Royal v St. Peter's

The Peterites failed to deliver the same form in their next outing as they went down to Royal on the first innings on their home grounds at Bambalapitiya. Royal's modest total of 202 was good enough to defend as the Peterites crumbled to a disappointing 137. Heshan Morawaka was the chief wrecker with a four wicket haul and was well backed up by Dhanushka Edasuriya and Ganganath Ratnayake.

Ananda v St. Anthony's

Ananda College put up a fine performance to beat St. Anthony's College on the first innings in their fixture at Katugastota. The Anandians aided by half centuries from Pradeep Boteju and Daminda Kularatne raced to 244 for 9 after restricting the opposition to 163 for 8.

S. Thomas' Kotte v Henagama Central

Eranga de Silva scored a double century and followed up with a seven wicket haul as S. Thomas' Kotte defeated Henagama Central by an innings and 129 runs in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket encounter at Kotte. S. Thomas' Kotte piled up a massive 334 for 7 and then bundled out the opposition for 89 and 116 in their two innings respectively.

Sri Rahula v Ananda Sastralaya

A penetrative spell of bowling from N. Atapattu (7 for 23) helped Sri Rahula MV beat Ananda Sastralaya on the first innings in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament match played at Peradeniya. Ananda Sastralaya were dismissed for 154 chasing Sri Rahula MV's total of 258 runs.

Rayal Panadura v Asoka MV

M. Umesh hit an elegant knock of 131 as Royal Panadura forced a draw to their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament match against Asoka MV at Panadura.

Royal Panadura made a bold reply scoring 245 runs after Asoka MV had scored a formidable 255 runs in their first innings.
