16 marooned Lankans rescued

Sixteen Sri Lankans stranded on a sand bank off Mannar were rescued by the Navy early on Monday.

According to security sources, the Sri Lankans, including women and children, had claimed they had fled the fighting in the North-East and had sought refuge in India sometime back.

The cessation of hostilities had made them return with their personal belongings. They had paid an Indian fishing boat to ferry them across and had been stranded on the sandbank near Urumalai, Mannar.

The Navy with the assistance of local fishermen had transported them to Talaimannar where they were handed over to Police for further investigations.

Meanwhile in Trincomalee district, naval troops on a routine harbour patrol on Monday morning had arrested nine men in four fibre glass dinghies fishing in the restricted sea area off the harbour. The men and equipment were handed over to the police for further investigations.
