News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | President has always stood for peace - Harim Peiris by Uditha Kumarasinghe The position of the President is that the ceasefire must be strictly adhered to by both parties, particulary by the LTTE, Presidential Spokesman Harim Peiris said yesterday. "This MoU is the only agreement that exists between the Government and the LTTE. So if the existing agreement is also being violated that will weaken the peace process," Peiris said at a press briefing in Colombo. Reiterating the President's position on the peace process, he said there is absolutely no truth in the allegation that the President is shifting her stance on the peace process from time to time. Even before the formation of the People's Alliance in 1993, the President's position was extremely clear. She always believed that there has to be a political and negotiated solution to bring peace. "However if there are weaknesses in the current peace process, these would be highlighted and criticised, not for damaging the process but for rectifying those weaknesses and strengthening it," Peiris added. The President is pleased that her concern expressed at the start of the peace process regarding the rights of children has been finally taken into account in the talks between the Government and the LTTE, the Presidential Media Spokesman said. |
