Confusion over arresting LTTE cadres

Defence sources said yesterday that the procedure to be adopted when LTTE cadres are apprehended violating the ceasefire agreement is that they be arrested as per instructions given by Defence Minister Tilak Marapana.

A number of cadres had been arrested and produced before magistrates in this manner.

However in a statement given a few days ago, the President had said that the LTTE cadres be released after obtaining a letter from them.

This has caused confusion among defence personnel, these sources pointed out.
