Travel go guide

Sanctuary for the senses

by Tharika Goonathilake

If you are stressed out with the grind and strain of life and need not just a vacation but a holiday to rejuvenate your tired body and mind, the Surya Lanka, Ayurveda Beach Resort at Talalla, Matara, offers an ideal sanctuary for the senses.

Built on a two-acre spacious plot of land, the tranquil beachfront resort specialises in Ayurvedic rejuvenation holidays and since its inception in 1996, has been helping both local and foreign guests to find the natural way to health.

From the moment you enter the retreat, it is obvious that you are in for a vacation of a different kind. For a start, there's a consultation with the resort's experienced Ayurveda physician and doctor, who helps to determine your body condition and the best treatment possible to soothe your ills.

Using a combination from East and West diagnosis techniques, the duo guides you on the best Ayurveda package to suit your purpose, whether it is acute migraine, gut irritating gastritis or even other complications brought on by sheer stress!.

Everything from rejuvenating head to toe body massages, to the more aliment-specific- treatments such as panchakarma, are then prescribed depending on individual needs.

Freely available literature and informative booklets ensure that guests understand the treatments in store. Mention must also be made of the resort's vegetarian but tasty meals, which offers a choice of fresh village vegetables and fruits, some grown in the retreat's own premises, and carefully prepared with due consideration to the guests' dietary requirements. Fish is also served on certain days.

The variety in choice and diversity in the preparation definitely leaves no room for complaints, given the determination of guests to fight the ills and pave the way to perfect health and harmony, the natural way.

And,that's not all. Depending on the budget, guests can opt for a two to three day unwinding massage therapy or a more specific ailment oriented Ayurveda package which can take a day, a week, or even a month!.

The resort is also not only about therapy and treatment. For relaxation, one can take a dip in the beautiful pool, take a stroll on the unpolluted golden beach or even try yoga and meditation.

The Surya Lanka Ayurveda Beach resort is located about 200 meters from the main Colombo/Tissamaharama highway.

Letters of love for Valentine's Day : My Mind is Made Up I'm Afraid It's You!

Dedicated to everyone who has known love, who is in love or who is about to fall in love, 'My Mind is Made Up' is an anthology of Aditha's short stories woven around the theme of love.

Aditha has kept things simple. As she says in a very short foreword: "Love is not something complicated as poets would have us believe. True love is something simple, so simple you hardly know it is there." The love angle apart, this is an ideal read for both armchair and real travellers, as Aditha has skilfully blended various places and characters from far and near to make the stories as diverse as possible.

She paints in our minds a host of localities from Colombo to Singapore, bring the places and characters alive. The titles tell half the story (Girl in Red Shirt, Check Mate, Ginger Biscuits and even Quantum Mechanics !) and leave the reader anticipating the rest of the story with zest.

With Valentine's Day at hand, one cannot think of a better gift for the man or woman in your heart. Aditha describes love at its best - just what Valentine's Day is all about.
