SB lashes out at those promoting imminent dissolution of Parliament

by Moneragala special correspondent

Minister S.B. Dissanayake, addressing a gathering of supporters of the two new Ministers Ranjit Madduma Bandara and Jayasundara Wijeykoon at a reception held at the Moneragala community centre hall lashed out at those promoting the idea of an imminent dissolution of Parliament to enable Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike to wrest absolute power in this country once again.

Minister Dissanayake repeatedly asserted that this was only wishful thinking on the part of Mrs. Bandaranaike to ensure her continued lingering in the political arena in this country, and not out of any genuine patriotic feelings for the welfare of the nation's populace.

He said that she was now smarting under the prospect of being thrown out of the power she now wields as a nominal leader whose image has been internationally condemned due to her communal politics. He said he remembered how when he accompanied her on her foreign fund raising jaunts abroad how practically all possible donors declined to accede to her requests for aid because of her communal politics amply displayed by LTTE banner carrying activists who exposed her communal politics.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe he said had overcome this sad situation by winning over all international communities for their unstinted support and with the success of the MoU and the real people's freedom now evident in all walks of life Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike is seeing day-dreams about a comeback to power, the taste of which is now tormenting her with all the current setbacks.

Her talks of dissolving the government can never take place because she has no power to do so without Parliamentary authority. First thing she has to do is to appoint a Prime Minister and as to who she should choose between D.M. Jayaratne and Ratnasiri Wickremanayake the two with majority support within the SLFP cannot be done with an ambitious brother pinching her. To overcome this obstacle she contemplates herself standing for the post of Prime Minister and when such a situation arises she will have to stomach all the filth the brother will burst forth with as he had done earlier when with the UNP. UNP supporters need not fear about any such events but even if she succeeds in dissolving Parliament, to her eternal dismay she will find that she has by this act dug her own grave in politics explaining her prospects as follows.

The Minister said If another Parliamentary general election has to be worked out by her dissolution, the election would be conducted by the present government with the Prime Minister and cabinet yet in power. She knows very well that I was the vote-catching machine when I was with her and this time that machine will work in favour of Ranil Wickremesinghe and his endeavours. The people of this country know Ranil's difficulties in promoting truly good governance with a paper-thin majority in Parliament, with the gains made so far in the peace quest the UNF will romp home to an absolute majority seats in Parliament that would give him freer movement without depending on dissenting factions in Parliament to retain his power.

He said the massive fund of International goodwill we have built will bring in unlimited financial resources to execute large-scale development projects which will in turn provide openings for the full employment targets being planned from next April. People can now be sure that this government will tackle the unemployment problem as no other government had done before. Soon after the next new year season (April) the masses will realise the wisdom of the UNP doctrine regarding good governance and they can be sure that those who have faced all difficulties for being UNPers will have ample grounds to rejoice and called on all people to stand by the UNP and regain a prosperous Sri Lanka without falling easy prey to the machinations of one person trying to ensure her political career at the cost of the suffering masses of this country.

Minister Jayasundara Wijeykoon accepting a virtual challenge offered by a UNP Provincial Councillor in his welcome speech said that he accepted the challenge asserting how when as an official in the Electricity Board he had given so much employment to local folks, the people will believe in him to provide better job opportunities for their people when in power politically.

Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara paid a tribute to his paternal uncle Dharmadasa Banda who as the undisputed leader of the Wellassa nursed and brought him up to this position from his tenth year when his father became a victim of political violence which he too has escaped since and promised to work for the good of the Wellassa region at all times in victory as well as in defeat. He thanked the organisers of this show of UNP strength in the area for the sacrifices made.

Dharmadasa Banda ex minister went on to explain the development plans being nursed for immediate implementation for the speedy development of the Moneragala district with the massive foreign aid flowing into the country due to the selfless services of the Ranil Wickremesinghe's political outlook. Already over a thousand irrigation tanks are being updated to provide water for the cultivation of the paddy lands abandoned due to the lack of water resources. They have targeted cultivation through both Yala and Maha seasons with this new approach and then the local farmers will all stand by the UNP and praise it for its practical wisdom in good governance.
