Avissawella most under developed in Colombo:MP

by Avissawella group correspondent

The rich do not require MPs' service. Only the poor living in remote villages need MPs, said Colombo District MP Mano Ganeshan.

Speaking at a ceremony held in connection with the opening of the Elston Colony Community Centre and laying of the foundation stone for a Kovil at Elston Colony Puwakpitiya, he said Avissawella is the most under developed area in Colombo district.

The MP said voters must keep in mind to cast their vote only for the people who work. Ganeshan said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga does not seem to be giving her full support to the peace process.

"If we fail to achieve peace this time, we won't get that chance again", he said. The MP said: "We must take the peace process forward and it must be taken to the village and educate the villagers. Some are still ignorant of the peace process."

He said Sri Lankans are today enjoying the dividends of peace.

Ganeshan said every community must have the right to enjoy equal rights.

"When one community is deprived of their rights they take to arms", he said.

The MP said the Tamils in North and East have problems and similarly Tamils in Colombo have problems.

They are different from the others. All those must be solved, he said.

Seetavakapura Urban Council Chairman K. D. P. Arsakularatna said 160 families living in this colony did a great sacrifice by leaving their homes at Arthurfield estate to provide room for the Seetavaka Industrial Park. They settled down in this colony without facilities, he said.

The Chairman said he was happy to see that many shortcomings had been rectified.

MP Ganeshan allocated Rs. 25,000 to build this community centre, Arsakularatne said.

He said some elements are trying to sabotage the peace process and drag the country to war.

Hanwella Divisional Secretary Wimalasiri Perera said the 160 families who have settled down here are a section of our people. "We must not separate our people into groups and break their unity". MMC Prakash Ganeshan also spoke.
