Politicians must not misuse powers, says Minister

by Matara central correspondent

Powers vested in politicians are not meant to be misused. Voters expect politicians to relieve the masses' burdens. Changes for the better can be expected soon, said Minister of Expatriate Employees' Welfare, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana.

Speaking at a three-day workshop to train young leaders at the National Youth Council at Hakmana Road, Matara, Abeywardhana said five commissions under Police, Elections, Public Services etc. have been constituted by the Act of Parliament.

When these commissions begin to perform their duties, people need not go after politicians to get their jobs such as admission of children to schools, employment and public service transfers etc, the Minister said. No country has solved problems perfectly and completely. When youth fail to achieve their ambitions, they become restless. Youths must learn to control themselves in achieving their aims and aspirations. It is with this aim workshops like this are held, he said.

Southern Province Director of Youth Affairs, Kalyane Gunawardena said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as former Minister-in-Charge of Youth Affairs rendered a great service to the youth. T. Rajapakse delivered the welcome speech.
