Hajj Festival on February 12

At the Conference of the learned Ulemas, Theologians, Katheebs and Trustees of Jumma Mosques, Representatives of the All Ceylon Jeemiyathul Ulema, Zaviyas, Thakiyas and the Department of Muslim Religious & Cultural Affairs held under the auspices of the Colombo Grand Mosque at the Madrasathul Hameediah Hall on February 2nd and 3rd, it was decided to commence the Islamic month of Zul Hajj Hijri 1423 on February 3, 2003. It was also decided to celebrate the Hajj Festival on Wednesday February 12, 2003.

The New Moon was sighted at Palamunai (Oluvil) on Sunday February 2, shortly after sunset.

The Conference had to go on to three Sessions. The second and third sessions were on February 3, after Asar and Esha respectively. This became necessary as the information received on the sighting of the new moon was only from Palamunia (Oluvil) and it had to be verified. The second and third sessions of the conference were co-chaired by Moulavi Al Haj. A. W. M. Reyal (Bari), Principal of Madeenathul llm Arabic College and Moulavi.

Yoosuf Najumudeen (Secretary of the Hilal Committee of the All Ceylon Jemmiyathul Ulema). Meera Mohideen, Assistant Director of the Department of Muslim Religious & Cultural Affairs together with, Chief Katheeb of Colombo Grand Mosque Moulavi Al Haj. J. Abdul Hameed (Bahji), Moulavi Al Haj. S. Niyas Mohamed, Director Ihsaniya Arabic College, Moulavi Bawa Mohideen, Moulavi Abdullah Jaufer, Moulavi I. L. M. Saleem, Moulavi S. H. M. Thahir, Moulavi. M. Z. M. Hussain, Moulavi S. A. R. M. Kaleel Moulana, Moulavi A. L. M. Mazeen and several other Thologians and Trustees of Jumma Mosques participated in the conference and the decision to celebrate the Hajj Festival on February 12, 2003 was taken unanimously.
