Science and technology a servant of the poor - Minister

by Sigiriya group correspondent

Science and technology is not a luxury, it has become a servant of the poor. We make use of it for the socio-economic development of society so as to give them a life of contentment, said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake at a farmers gathering held at Dambulla.

This was arranged by the Regional Economic Advancement Project where they have renovated 16 abandoned tanks in the Dambulla Electorate.

The Minister who was the chief guest on the occasion said - "I would like to interpret what I mean by science and technology that is being in your service. Paddy Research, Tea Research, Coconut are maintained by the state. that is for you. REAP - Dambulla Economic Centre, Up Country Rehabilitation Department are the agents through which the findings of the technological research are put into action. In this context I wish to point out a summary of service done to the Matale and Dambulla area within the past one year of our service. We spent Rs. 1,280 lakhs for development of roads in the Matale district.

He said a sum of Rs. 400 lakhs for the development of areas of less income has been implemented. For renovation of economic advancement project and trade complexes another sum of Rs. 400 lakhs has been allocated. Now Dambulla is at the door of development. Widening the road by the RDA has commenced. Matale too is on the track. Under ADB loans we are going ahead with our development projects.

The Minister said the Govt has extended the limit of the Up-Country Rehabilitation Department up to Polonnaruwa. Our development projects have several facets. In the field of Education, I have taken steps to start 256 centres for Computer Awareness Programmes and 25 of which will be set up in the Matale district.

The Minister of Public Administration, Local and Government and Provincial Councils Alick Aluvihare thanked REAP - which comes under the Central Region Development Ministry for taking steps to renovate tanks in the area. This is the most crucial period of the history we undergo. In spite of that the UNF government marches along the path of prosperity bringing in peace to the country and urged to face difficulties and to go ahead to achieve the targets.

Ranjith Aluvihare MP - Matale District, Dambulla PS Chairman A. G. Sirisena, Dambulla Provincial Secretary and Chairman of Matale, Pallepola and Galewela also spoke.
