National Independence Day at Dharmakeerthi Pirivena, Kollupitiya

by Ananda Kannangara

The National Independence Day ceremony conducted by the Sri Dharmakeerthi Pirivena at Kollupitiya was held at the temple premises under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday.

A series of religious activities to commemorate Sri Lanka's 55th National Independence were also conducted with the participation of a large number of Buddhist monks and distinguished guests including Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament.

The days proceedings began with the singing of the Jayamangala gathas by schoolgirls. Thereafter, the Prime Minister hoisted the National Flag. He also paid a floral tribute to the statue of the Late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake at the temple premises.

Buddhasasana Minister W.J.M. Lokubandara said that among the freedom fighters in our country, the late D.S. Senanayake's name will never be erased from the minds of the people when considering the great sacrifice he made in the independence struggle.

Although we have been granted the supreme freedom legally by our Constitution, the freedom of thought is more essential than anything else.

"Therefore, if we act according to our conscience, we can automatically achieve the freedom of thought and this has also been indicated in the "Kalama Sutta" by Lord Buddha."

He also spoke about the peace and freedom the country is enjoying due to the far-sighted policies of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Delivering an anusasana, Ven. Wewaldeniye Medhalankara Thera reminded the gathering that Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake visited the Sri Dharmakeerthi Temple on February 4, 1948 and planted a jak sapling in the temple garden to coincide with that historic occasion.

The Ven. Thera also spoke on the improvements of the current peace process and blessed the Prime Minister and the whole nation.
