Lanka participates in BuildExpo 2003 exhibition in India The members of the Institute for Construction Training and Development (ICTAD) organised a Sri Lanka stall at the BuildExpo 2003 Exhibition in Coimbatore, India last month on the initiative of Minister of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure, Arumugam Thondaman. ICTAD was represented by Chairman S.K.R. Goonewardene, Director (Training) M.N.M. Zafar and Deputy Director, R. Sivapragasam. "This has given the local construction industry a big boost and new vistas have been opened for the mutual benefit of the countries," the officials said. The BuildExpo 2003 exhibition of the Building Industry was organised by the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (ACCE) India, Builders Association of India (BAI) and the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association. This exhibition brought under one roof building materials, equipment, chemicals, modern trends in the construction industry and was a platform for sharing experiences, techniques and knowledge with business as the purpose. A total of 210 companies/organisations exhibited their products and services at this exhibition. The Sri Lanka stall representing the local construction industry presented various aspects of the construction industry and the activities of ICTAD in the spheres of grading of contractors, preparation of tender documents and guidelines, training of Masons, Carpenters, Plumbers, Painters, Tillers, Machine Operators, Mechanics, Supervisors, Engineers and the ICTAD construction excellence award. Although this was the first occasion, where the Institute for Construction Training and Development (ICTAD) has participated in an overseas exhibition, the response was been very encouraging, ICTAD participants said. Many members of the BAI and ACCE, prospective investors and financiers for local markets have expressed their interest in visiting Sri Lanka this month for possible business collaboration and joint ventures. The Sri Lanka stall representing the local construction industry presented various aspects of the Construction Sector. The construction industry of Sri Lanka was represented by ICTAD, ICC, S-Lon, Sierra and CML Edwards. The ICC while providing general information of the company, specifically emphasised their SBS pre-stressed beams which could be used as an alternative to the conventional slab at a lesser cost. The S-Lon (Pvt) Ltd., which is one of the leading local companies manufacturing PVC items, introduced the Gutter System at this exhibition. This was particularly of interest to the Indian industrialists and the public at a time when rain harvesting is being seriously contemplated in India. |
