Prasanna’s paintings at Alliance Francaise

Prasanna Weerasundara will hold a watercolour paintings exhibition at the Alliance Francaise de Colombo till February 3. An old boy of Vidyartha College, Kandy, Prasanna is now in the ancient hill capital where he has lived since childhood, as an inhabitant of the small village of Pilimathalawa.

The artist has made of painting his full time occupation. Prasanna claims that painting was his childhood obsession which grew with him through adulthood. He likes to paint his surrounding which is natural. His expression in watercolour, with a range of techniques, sometimes can confuse the viewer. His natural flair for creating images using films of water colour lapping over each other bringing about shades of fresh colouring is remarkable.

From 1994 to 1996, he participated in a series of art exhibitions organised by his school, and he held his first solo exhibition at the E. L. Sennanayake Children’s library, in 1997. It was around this time that he received the support of Mr. Rambukwella, the art instructor of the Kandy Educational Department. In March 1999, Prasanna exhibited at the Alliance Francaise in Kandy, supported by its director Kushani Herath and Rohan de Silva who pushed Prasanna into using his talents to suit interior designers’ requests.

Some of his work, created on these lines, were used to decorate the interiors of the ‘Le Kandyan’ hotel in Kandy, after which he was called upon to do similar work at other hotels of the hill capital. Prasanna Bandara’s mind is always full of dramatic imagination seeking new methods and ways of creating images. At twenty five, he feels only a little has been achieved owing to financial restraints. His last exhibition showed to all his talent. He wishes to thank many all his colleagues and others who have helped him throughout career and especially the Alliance Francaise for their continuous support.

Ron Regel’s musical purpose

by Talia JayasekeraRon Regel is a man with a purpose. Music is his life’s passion and spreading it is his cause. He is currently in the country to promote his ground breaking new musical project, `The Odyssey’, which was first released in Australia in 2002. It received rave reviews from musical giants throughout the world.

“The music I promote is really a synthesis of East and West. The new album explores the musical genres of Indian Music, with its haunting ragas dating back to the time of the Vedas, integrated with the tribal pulse of global indigenous rhythms. We call it universal music and it is performed by some of Australia’s finest world music stars”, explained Regel.

Originally from our fair shores, where he studied at St. Peter’s, Regel now lives in Sydney, Australia. He is a musician and producer who believes that music is a global language.

It is a concept embraced and promoted by Regel with his own independent record company `Global Grooves’.

“Just in the last two years, a third of the entries in the top five categories for the `Best World Music Album’ in the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) have been represented by my record label”, says multi-talented Regel.

‘Total Life Artistry’, a book written by Regel launched in Sri Lanka in 1998, explored issues like how to develop a peaceful meditative mind and how to achieve harmony and mastery in life, leading to a more peaceful world. “The power of certain music forms, which have a unifying force, can transform the world.

That is my message”, said Regel. Whilst in Sri Lanka, he hopes to develop the foundations for his next musical project. He hopes to gain some insight into Sri Lankan music by visiting many religious sites throughout the country.

“The new album will seek to capture the energy of Sri Lanka, the land of my birth”, said Regel. “What i am looking for is the very essence of this land and its people which can be captured and expressed in music and music”.Regel’s visit is an ongoing worldwide promotion which commenced at Womex World Music Expo in Essen, Germany in October, 2002.

Rupavahini’s next attraction Sanda Maddahana

The story of ‘Sanda Maddahana’ (midday moon) about a virtuous man who stands up against evil and injustices committed by society especially corrupt politicians and their henchmen in the bureaucracy, begins telecast over Rupavahini on Tuesday February 11.

Scripted by K. B. Herath, the story revolves round a teacher in a rural school, who receives a politically-facilitated promotion without this knowledge and as a principal comes under pressure from his politician benefactor to admit children. His refusal to bow down to political pressure results in much opposition from his contemporaries and family, but he struggles against injustice and harassment and ultimately shows that truth will always prevail.

Sanda Maddahana which was shot largely in the Padukka area, stars Ranjan Ramanayake, Kanchana Mendis, Cletus Mendis, Avanthi Aponso, G. R. Perera, Sanjaya Leelarathne and many other accomplished actors and actresses.

Set in Ratnapura and in a border village in the North Central province, the teledrama shows the social and economic pressures that people face and the extremes to which they are driven to survive.

Commenting on what was his 20th teledrama, Bermin Fernando said he was influenced by the real-life suicide of a principal serving in a school following harassment. He stressed however, that in Sanda Maddahana, the character of the principal doesn’t succumb to pressure but confronts each situation with courage.

He added that the significance of the title of the teledrama ‘Sanda Maddahana’ is that such a character is as rare as the moon at midday. The teledrama directed by teledrama veteran Bermin Lylie Fernando and produced by Mark Fernando and S. T. Murthi, is sponsored by Swadeshi Industrial Works Ltd.
