Ministers take oaths, ending tussle

The tussle over new Ministerial appointments ended yesterday with the official swearing in of six new Ministers (non-Cabinet) and a Deputy Minister by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at President's House.

They are Ranjith Madduma Bandara (Tourist Development), Hemakumara Nanayakkara (Agricultural Technology and Crop Productivity), D.M. Bandaranayake (Paddy Cultivation), Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena (Expatriate Employees' Welfare), Lucky Jayawardena (Registration of Land Ownership), Keheliya Rambukwella (Science and Technology), Jayasundera Wijekoon (Commerce and Consumer Affairs Deputy Minister).

The oath taking ended a three month deadlock between the Government and the President who was opposed to the subject of Disaster Management assigned to Gampaha District UNP MP Sarathchandra Rajakaruna claiming it came under her own purview.

Rajakaruna who has been allocated the portfolio of Disaster Relief is out of the country and would take his oaths on his return, Government sources said.
