Temple - village youth uplift vital - Opposition Leader

by Kahawa special correspondent

The temple must be instrumental in the rural economic development through temple-based vocational training, said Opposition Leader, Mahinda Rajapakse.

He was addressing a meeting that followed after, SPC Governor Kingsley T. Wickramaratne opened a new conference hall, at the Dhamma School affiliated to Dodanduwa, Kumarakanda Kumara Maha Vihara, built at a cost of Rs. 6 1/2 lakhs contributed by foreigners and people of the area.

Temple's Viharadhipati Venerable Dodanduwa Dhammasena Nayaka Thera presided.

Mr. Rajapakse said, "that it was the bounden-duty of all Buddhists to work for the uplift of Buddhist temples, as most of the temples are affected due to disunity among Buddhists."

"The Temple must join hands with the youth of the village, as the uplift of youth is the uplift of the Temple," he said.

"Nobody may be called a Buddhist if he or she disrespect, other religions or its followers according to Lord Buddha's teachings" he said.

SPC Governor Kingsley T. Wickramaratne said, that Buddhism and its teachings remained unchanged under any transitional circumstances since its inception.

SPC Chief Minister H. G. Sirisena, Sarath Weerasekara, Vinie Kariyawasam and Venerable Dodanduwe Dhammasena Thera also spoke.
