New laws to curb corruption at airports

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The Government will introduce new legislation to curb malpractices and corruption at airports and ports.

More attention should also be paid to ensure safety of customs officers who risked their lives in uncovering malpractices and duty frauds to collect revenue for the development process, said Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunewardena at a ceremony to mark International Customs Day at the Customs Headquarters yesterday.

"We have seen some officers even sacrificing their lives while on duty. Investigating officials should be given adequate safety," he added.

Refuting allegations about the proposed Revenue Authority, Gunewardena said it would further enhance the efficiency and productivity of the Customs, Inland Revenue and Excise Departments.

The Minister said the Government will ensure job safety of employees attached to these three departments. "The functioning of these three institutions are vital for the country's economy and development process," he said.

Gunewardena said the Government is ready to discuss the proposed authority.

Commending the performance of the Customs Department during last year, Treasury Secretary Charitha Ratwatte said changes are necessary to face emerging challenges. "This is common to the Customs Department too to accelerate the country's economic growth as this department could play a major role in Sri Lanka's development process," he said.

Customs Director General Sarath Jayatilake and Customs (Policy Planning and Research) Director R. U. Gooneratne also spoke.
