by Florence Wickramage The Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) has invited Sri Lankan journalists for its plenary session at Guwahati, capital of Assam state in the north-eastern part of India in June, said IFWJ President K. Vikram Rao. Rao also lauded efforts of E. Gopal and S.M. Karmegam, General Secretary and President of the Indo-Sri Lanka Journalists Friendship Association (ISJFA) in exchanging journalists groups between both countries for the past four years. He also appreciated the hospitality extended to 27 journalists from the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala by the Sri Lankan chapter of the two-nation association when they visited the country last year. Rao has agreed to invite 60 journalists from Sri Lanka to the IFWJ headed by the President of the Sri Lanka Press Association D.F. Kariyakarawana. According to IFWJ Secretary General Parmanand Pandey, the team is expected to travel to Chennai and thereafter by train to Guwahati at consessional rates. Arrangements could be made for journalists desirous of flying to Calcutta and travel a short distance to Guwahati or directly land at Guwahati, Pandey said. According to Gopal, this would be a great opportunity for journalists to mix together and exchange and discuss professional matters. Sri Lankan journalists contingents have been regularly attending IFWJ's sessions without a break - Pondicherry in 1995, Mysore in 1999 and the National Council meeting in Gujarat. The Sri Lankan team had been a major participant with IFWJ at the launching of the Confederation of Asian Journalists' Unions at Nainital in the Himalayan ranges. |
