Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will visit Sri Lanka during January 30 to 1 February, 2003. The impact of the armed conflict on children and the protection of children will be the focal point of her visit here. Bellamy's visit, is also sequel to increased UN presence in the country and a precursor to the scheduled arrival of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan next month. She will call on the President, Prime Minister, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, Health and Social Welfare as well as LTTE leaders in Vanni and Jaffna and Government officials during her three day stay. Visiting UNICEF assisted projects, attending the launch of the Media Campaign Against Child Abuse at the National Child Protection Authority, visiting the Bureau for the Protection of Children and Women of the Police Department and meetings with donor country ambassadors and heads of UN Agencies are also on the cards. Bellamy, who has been at the helm of UNICEF since 1995 has lobbied for the cause of children all over the world and is credited for focusing UNICEF attention on five key areas including, immunizing every child, getting children to school, facilitating schools to offer quality basic education, reducing the spread of HIV/AIDs and its impact on young people, campaigning for the protection children from violence and exploitation as well as introducing early childhood programs in every country. She was also responsible in encouraging the General Assembly to allow children to take part in the UN Special Session on Children in May 2002. Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) has sponsored and provided leadership towards organising a workshop in Kilinochchi to determine the plight of over 60,000 refugees in Tamil Nadu. Following the workshop, a decision has been made to relocate these refugees in their original homes and villages with the co-ordination of the UNHCR and relevant agencies. |
