New head of SLMM is Tellefsen

Retired Major General Tryggave Tellefsen of the Royal Norwegian Army, has been appointed as the new Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), the Norwegian embassy said in a press release.

He succeeds Major General (Retired) Trond Furuhovde.

His appointment follows the planned departure of the present SLMM Head General Furuhovde and a subsequent request made by the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Major General Tellefsen is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka in late February or early March.

Tellefsen, who has made an outstanding contribution to the establishment of the SLMM pursuant to the Ceasefire Agreement of February 22,2003 was largely responsible for leading the SLMM through its crucial, first year of operation, the embassy said in the statement.

His services to facilitate the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE in their efforts to implement and consolidate the Ceasefire Agreement has been lauded by both parties, it said.

His predecessor Furuhovde will remain available to advise Norway on matters relating to the peace process.

Tellefsen, who comes with broad experience from the Royal Norwegian Army also records a distinguished service in peacekeeping operations.

He has served as the commander of the Multinational Force and Observes-the peacekeeping force that oversees security arrangements in the Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel-from April 1997 through March 2001.

He also served as the General Officer Commanding UN Forces in Macedonia from 1994-1995 and as the Commander of the Infantry Regiment responsible for the recruitment and training for all Norwegian Army units in UN peacekeeping missions and other assignments aborad from 1989-1994.
