Pramuka Case : Rohan Perera fails to turn up

by Sarath Malalasekera

Pramuka Bank's former Chairman and Executive Director Rohan Perera was not present in court when the case was called before the Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena yesterday.

Judge Weerawardena directed the counsel for Perera to inform his client to appear before court once he returns to the country.

At the outset Upul Indika, counsel for Perera told court that his client had left the country before notice was issued on him and undertook to inform his client to appear before court immediately after he returns to the country.

The Judge directed the CID to file a further report in connection with their investigations on March 28 and ordered the parties concerned to appear when noticed.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the illegal activities of the Pramuka Bank on a complaint made by the Central Bank yesterday filing a report in court said that the investigations into the matter is not over yet. The CID said that they have to record statements from fifty more persons and moved for a long date to file a further report.

Earlier, Judge Weerawardena directed Perera, Managing Director A.H.A. Mendis, six senior managerial staff and two residents of Wennappuwa not to leave the country without court permission.

The Judge also ordered Perera not enter the bank at Kollupitiya until further notice.

The Judge made these orders on the last hearing date on an application by State Counsel Harippriya Jayasundera who appeared with the CID for the prosecution.

Kalinga Indatissa, Maithri Gunaratne, Ranil Samarasuriya, Lal de Alwis and Aruna Priyadarshana appeared for the Pramuka Bank, Managing Director and six senior managerial staff of the Pramuka Bank.

Pramuka petitions CB decision

Pramuka Bank through its directors yesterday petitioned the Court of Appeal (CA) to quash the decision of the Central Bank Monitory Board to liquidate the Bank. In a writ application filed before the CA the directors claim that the decisions of the Central Bank were not in the best interest of depositors, creditors, employees and the shareholders and as a result the depositors may stand to lose in excess of 60 per cent of the value of their deposits.

Petitioners further state that Pramuka had at all times paid all capital and interest due to the depositors on the due dates and had never refused payments in any way. In addition the petitioner further claim that it had at all times adhered to the liquidity ratio of 20 per cent specified by the Central Bank.
