Kumana Bird sanctuary opens to public

by Florence Wickramage

The birding season has begun and bird lovers and environmentalists will very soon be afforded the opportunity of enjoying bird-life when the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) opens the Kumana Bird sanctuary shortly.

The necessary constructions are being completed and the park will be officially opened after a span of nearly twenty years H.M.B.C. Herath, Director General of the DWLC told the Daily News yesterday.

Kumana is world famous as a birds' paradise. Out of the recorded 427 bird-species, 250 species are found in Sri Lanka. From about August last year migratory birds have been coming to Sri Lanka to escape the harsh winters of Siberia, Scandinavia and Western Europe.

The birds use two migratory routes and make long journeys flying over the seas. These birds land at places like Kalamatiya in the South and at different wild life parks. Sri Lanka has very many parks where bird-life could be observed. Among them are Kurulu Kele at Kegalle, Wirawila at Hambantota, Udawattekele at Mahanuwara, Kiralakele at Matara and Bundala. Incidentally the Bundala wetland is a Ramsar site.

For a profitable day's bird-watching, Kalamatiya is ideal perhaps surpassing Kumana and Arugam-bay or Komari - holding rare varieties like the Ruhunu Koka the largest among birds. Walking along the fringes there are many sights to thrill the bird-lover. In these exhilarating surroundings there is always the off-chance of spotting something rare, even a species never recorded in the island before.

With the first gleam of light, Kumana and Kalametiya are musical fiestas of bird singing, rising in crescendo. Each bird-park has its own surprises with varied colourful birds flying into the waterways, their wings flapping, gliding over the waters in search of food or rising up to the skies in search of greener pastures. Migratory birds stay in Sri Lanka till the end of the season and often make their homeward journey in May.
