Maersk logistics extends relationship with IKEA Maersk Logistics has signed an agreement to extend the co-operation with world leading home furnishings and accessories retailer IKEA. Maersk Logistics will manage the new Distribution Centre (DC) and Customer Distribution Centre (CDC) in Torsvik, Sweden, for IKEA. This represents a natural extension of the current co-operation between the two companies, and Maersk Logistics expects to increase square meters operated from 90,000 to 210,000 in 2003. "Needless to say, seamless operation of our distribution centres is crucial to IKEA's continued success, and we are very happy to have Maersk Logistic manage these important tasks for us. We have been working with Maersk Logistics for several years, and when it came to the new Torsvik centres it was only logical for us to ask them to manage this operation for us," said Martin Sebek, Nordic distribution manager for IKEA. The DC provides goods manufactured in the Nordic region for stores in the Nordic region and North America. The CDC will be used for direct deliveries to customers in the Nordic region. "Maersk Logistics is very pleased to be given the responsibility of managing this master operation for IKEA. The operation of the two distribution centres involves many of Maersk Logistics' key competencies, and we look forward to serving IKEA and IKEA's customers through the two centres," said Vagn Pedersen, Nordic manager for Maersk Logistics. The DC and CDC will have a warehousing capacity of 216,000 m3. The volume throughput for 2002 is estimated at 1,400,000 m3. Maersk Logistics is a recognised leader in the international logistics market, providing customised solutions for integrated supply chain management, warehousing and distribution, and sea and airfreight transport. Maersk Logistics employs over 4,300 people in over 200 offices in more than 70 countries. |
