NYK keen to invest at JCT

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) of Tokyo, Japan is very keen to invest in the Colombo Port's container Terminal (JCT) if the government decides to privatise it.

Managing Director Maritime Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Heyleys, Mohan Pandithage said that most of the Indian container Terminals have been privatised. "Chenei, Kandala, Tuticorin, JNPT of Mumbai Mundara, have been already privatised and more Ports in Cochin and Mumbai are to come under the hammer".

He said that P & O and the Ports Authority of Shipping in Singapore (PSA) are now controlling most of these Indian Ports.

He said that there was speculation that the container Terminal at the Colombo Port (JCT) is also to be Privatised and if and when this is done NYK Line will invest in it to develop it.

He said that NYK Line is one of the oldest shipping companies in Sri Lanka with a history of over 100 years and had contributed towards the expansion and development of the Colombo Port for many years.

Pandithage said that NYK owns over 800 ships, and many terminals around the world. "Therefore when cargo is sent through us a person is guaranteed of a more efficient service".

He also said that NYK line has acquired Ceres Terminals, Incorporated which earns an annual revenue in excess of U.S.$150 Million.

"This company was founded in 1958 and currently provides terminal operating services in many countries and also participates in a joint venture with Logistic in Montreal, Quebec, Canada".

He said that Ceres Terminals handles in excess of 2.5 million TEUs at its various facilities and provides NYK with a significant terminal operating base on the East and Gulf Coasts of North America."Ceres also gives NYK an important terminal opportunity at its innovative Paragon Terminal in Europe".

Subsequent to this acquisition, NYK has also indicated their desire to be involved in container terminal management in the Indian Sub-Continent region.

NYK is represented in Colombo by NYK Line Lanka Private Limited, which is a joint venture company between NYK Line of Japan and the Hayleys Group, the leading blue-chip company in Sri Lanka.
