Port and Shipping Committee to meet bi-weekly

The Committee on Port and Shipping Policy in Sri Lanka which had their inaugural meeting on Monday has decided to hold meetings twice a week and discuss different issues at each meeting. Accordingly, the committee will meet every Wednesday and Saturday for six weeks from this week.

The committee also decided to invite officials of the key private sector institutions under the Shipping, Port and Port Services category for the meetings depending on the issue to be discussed on that particular day. "For instance we had the representatives of the Colombo Dockyard Limited at the first meeting on Monday as we discussed several issues related to funding the development ancillary services, ship repairs, ship building and bunkering on Monday," an official of the Committee told the Daily News.

Representatives from the South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT), Ship Suppliers' Association and the Sri Lanka Logistics Providers' Association are scheduled to attend future meetings of the Committee, he said.

The committee representing key stakeholders of the shipping sector in the country nominated by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is entrusted with the task of reformulating the National Ports and Shipping Policy introduced by the Government in 1997. The committee has been given a time frame of six weeks to finalise the formulation of the policy.

Heads of key associations and institutions in the shipping sector including Ceylon Association of Ships Agents (CASA), Sri Lanka Association of Vessel Operators (SLAVO), Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Sri Lanka Shippers Council, Sri Lanka Freight forwarders Association, Association of Clearing and Forwarding Agents, Association of Container Transporters, Central Freight Bureau and Ceylon Shipping Corporation are in the Committee.
