French team holds talks with Kashmir's main political alliance NEW DELHI, Jan 21 (AFP) - A three-member French delegation on Tuesday met the leaders of Kashmir's main political alliance in the state's summer capital Srinagar, Press Trust of India reported. The delegation, led by parliamentarian Pierre Lallouche, discussed the situation in the strife-torne region and told the All Parties Hurriyat Conference the problem could only be resolved by peaceful means, PTI said. Hurriyat chairman Abdul Ghani Bhat said he favoured talks to resolve the Kashmir issue, but added that the participation of Pakistan was also necessary in order to achieve a long-term solution. The Hurriyat is an umbrella forum of nearly two dozen Kashmiri separatist political groups. New Delhi says it will not talk to Pakistan until Islamabad stops supporting Kashmiri rebels militarily. Islamabad denies the charge, but says it renders moral and political support to the "just cause of Kashmiris for their right to self-determination." India and Pakistan have fought two of their three wars over the disputed Kashmir region which is claimed by both. More than 37,500 people have died in the Himalayan state since 1989 when the armed rebellion began. |
