Rockets hit gas pipeline in southwest Pakistan ISLAMABAD, Jan 21 (AFP) - Rockets fired by unknown assailants Tuesday ruptured a gas pipeline in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, threatening domestic gas supplies to the capital Islamabad, officials said. The official said at least three rockets were fired hitting the main pipeline near Dera Bugti, 650 kilometres (400 miles) southwest of the capital Islamabad. "Paramilitary officials and engineers from Sui Northern Gas Pipline (SNGPL) are trying to repair the damage," a security official told AFP. An engineer from SNGPL said the damage could disrupt gas supplies to Islamabad, the nearby city of Rawalpindi and Peshawar. "We are trying to control the damage," the engineer, Saifuddin Bugti, told AFP. The 5,215-kilometre (3,260-mile) Sui pipeline network is a major supplier of domestic gas. The official linked the attack to problems with local tribal people over electricty supplies which were stopped a few days ago due to non-payment of bills. |
